Coastal Cup '06

Team Dance Away on Delicate Balance

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Probably way too many pictures and other info related to Delicate Balance (Andrews 56) doing the Coastal Cup starting 6/8/06.

Race started near the St. Francis YC , rounded Seal Rocks near the Cliff House and proceeds down the coast to finish in Santa Barbara. The race is about 300 miles (my GPS trip odometer had us traveling 304.89 nm however this included both the prestart and some manueverings after finishing).  We started at 11:05 and finished at about 4:56 PM on 6/9 (Friday afternoon).  Our overall average speed was 9.7 nm/hour and our highest speed over ground was 26.1 nm/hr by GPS.  We had covered 255 miles at the 24 hour point.  At this writing, I am not sure how we corrected out however there were a number of our competitors at the docks when we arrived at the SBYC.

I always wish that I had taken more pictures.  Somehow the pictures don't seem to do my memories justice.  However, they are fun to look at and do help me to remember things that I had forgotten.  If anyone has other pictures or information please pass em along.   I would love to add to what is here (go ahead and use the address on my latest email message).

Some mental snapshots that are not very well represented here in the pictures are: Billy and Bob's heroic driving during a near black out at night in thirty plus knot (by our instruments) winds; our brush with the ship that caused Doug's douching in the companionway; the way the moon showed through the clouds and reflected off the water before being blotted out from sight in the early morning; the whales; our Friday evening revelry at the SBYC; the drive back up to the Bay Area; Bob's broken ribs; and... lots more I guess.  The pictures are just a taste.

I know that we all want to thank the Santa Barbara Yacht Club for being such good hosts (however they still owe me an XL Coastal Cup T-shirt and hat!).

Oh and also, as we were leaving the bay, I took some fun pictures of Ragtime.  Not sure why I'm being so nice by posting them cuz as I was gleefully taking pictures of their boat, they were trying to roll us.  But owners hardly ever get to see pictures of their boats underway so I thought it would be nice to post em.    Ragtime later drove into a hole and had some trouble with their chute before we lost sight of them.  However, they were in Santa Barbara when we arrived so it couldn't have been all bad.

Fortunately for everyone, this is the closest that I got to the wheel all
the way down.  Someday I think it would be nice to get a handle on this
big boat driving stuff (at least get so my sphincter wasn't completely tight
when I was at the wheel) but for now, I'm just happy to be doing the bow
so I can get to sail with these guys.
